TRUECHLD SAYS: iCarly soars to the top of our list because Carly is a character that breaks the stereotype of what a leading girl can be. Carly Shay is a confident, funny and smart girl who hosts her own web show along with her best friend Sam. While Carly is a typical teenager in that she likes boys and clothes, it is not the main focus of her character. She is much more focused on her show and being an independent thinker. Her best friend Sam is another great character because she is irreverent and enjoys teasing boys - particularly Carly's other best friend Freddie. Sam shows us that a female character can be appealing even if she does fall into one of the traditional archetypes.
Carly also has an older brother, Spencer, who is a goofy artist. He provides us with a refreshing character who does not conform to the traditional male stereotypes.
Overall, we love iCarly because it reinforces the idea that we don't need to see the same stereotypical characters on TV and that broader characters can lead the shows. | | | |
